Building Nepal's First Sattelite
20 Jan 2021

 Hi and Namaste,

My name is Hari Ram SHRESTHA. I am presently doing Ph.D. in Electrical and Space Systems Engineering at Kyushu Institute of Technology (Kyutech), Fukuoka, Japan. I am under Professor Mengu Cho of La SEINE (Laboratory of Lean Satellite Enterprises and In-orbit Experiments). I got my scholarship grant from he United Nations/Japan Long-term Fellowship Program for "Post-graduate study on Nano-Satellite Technologies (PNST). I completed my master’s degree in Applied Science for Integrated Systems Engineering also at Kyutech (2018 – 2020). I took my bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communication at College of Information Technology and Engineering (CITE) in 2010 -2014.
The Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering was significant to my career because it helped to further my interest in research and satellite projects. I studied engineering at the College of Information Technology and Engineering (CITE) Purbanchal University.
As an assigned member of the BIRDS-3 satellite project from Nepal, my responsibilities were to design, develop and perform functional tests on BIRDS 3 Electrical Power System (EPS) power generation and distribution to the satellite mission payloads and subsystems. The following tasks were conducted considering that the satellite should survive under space environment conditions.
NepaliSat-1 is the first Satellite of Nepal, which Dr. Abhas Maskey and I built for Nepal and for all Nepalese people. Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) is the host organization under the Nepal Government's support.
Since Nepal is one of three participating countries in BIRDS 3, NepaliSat-1 is the first satellite of our Nation. It is a matter of honor and privilege to be involved in the BIRDS-3 Project. It was launched on 17th July 2019 from the USA. Besides, it has been orbiting Earth for 19 months, and I hope Nepal’s first satellite will be working continuously in space until the next year. I had this opportunity to study further, and I was also very enthusiastic about joining the team.
I am also involved in the BIRDS-4 1U and KITSUNE 6U satellite projects, working on EPS.
